Exterior Paint & Interior Trim (fabric) Codes

In March of 1977 paint codes were changed from numbers to a 3 letter system. Since this was a transition period some cars had numbers and some had letters.

Greyed-out codes are Triumph colors not available on the Spitfire.
Other notes: Russet Brown, Inca Yellow and Tahiti Blue were also used on MGB’s and Midgets. Mallard Blue is not the same color as MG’s Green Mallard. British Racing Green is not the same as MG/BMC BRG colors. Carmine Red may be the same as MG’s Carmine Red.
Thanks Richard B. Gosling for help with dates of paint runs.

 Interior Trim:

Trim colors use the same numbers as above except they had prefix letters added to indicate the type of fabric.

Vinyl – no letter prefix
Leather – letter H prefix
Cloth – letter C prefix.

example (my car):
Paint 75, Trim 74 – car has British Racing Green paint with Beige vinyl trim

Vinyl Grain:
There were two grains used on Spitfires: a small, smooth grain called Stag and a larger, rougher grain called 1290.

Mk1-3 used a smooth grain “Stag” vinyl
MkIV (70-73) used smooth grain “Stag”
MkIV (70-73) used coarse grain “1290”
1500’s to comm FH113677 used a coarse grain “1290”
1500’s comm FH113678 on used a smooth grain “Stag”

Cloth Inserts:
At commission number FH100020 (FM60006U) the cloth inserts were became available. The cloth’s houndstooth insert was available in two colors: black (C11 or RAC) or tan (C74) with matching vinyl colors. At comm # FH113678 the houndstooth pattern changed to a slightly smaller pattern.
