The Commission number is your car’s VIN number and is the best way to tell your car’s age**. It is located in different locations depending on when your car was built.
The Commission plate is most often located under the car’s hood (bonnet) on left side of the body photo and will look similar to this photo. (for more information about body numbers, click on your car’s section below)
On later cars the plate was moved to the driver’s side door pillar. (photo) There might also be a plate on the left side inside the windshield. (photo)
Of course your commission number will be on your title.

In the US the Department of Motor Vehicles uses the term “VIN” (vehicle identification numbers). Triumph used Commission numbers. Commission numbers were used until late 1979 when the US required Triumph to change to real VIN numbers in the VIN number format.

Spitfire Mk4world: Nov. 1970 (1971 model year)-Nov. 1974
US/North America: 1970-1972*
Commission #FH3-FH64995 (US used FK & FM),
FK prefix for US 1300’s, FM for US 1500’s, FL for Sweden, a few US bound 1974 1500’s were built in Seniffe Belgium-1FM prefix and IU suffix, O suffix for cars fitted with overdrive transmissions.

*There is some confusion about what is a Mk4 and what is a 1500
All 1971 & 1972 cars were MkIV’s.
US 1973 & 74 cars (FM commission numbers) received the 1500cc engine (to try to counteract the strangulating emissions regs in the US) while the rest of the world stayed Mk4’s with 1296cc engine. These cars were essentially MkIV’s with 1500 badges and engine.
In Nov. 74 all Spitfires received the 1500cc engine and were officially called “Spitfire 1500”.
