Rear Axle and Gearbox- All Models

November, 1973

We have noticed quite an increase in the number of rear axle pinion seals and gearbox rear mainshaft seals being replaced under warranty. As a result, a field check has indicated that, in many cases, this has come about as a result of the transmission and rear axle being overfilled, which causes a build-up of pressure within these units, forcing oil out past the seals.

We would recommend that, during P.D.I. and subsequent servicing, the filter plugs are removed and the vehicle allowed to stand for a few minutes in order for the oil to find its correct level.
